It's Diwali- again!
And I'm not at home - again!
tch tch
I really need to get out of this habit of bunking festivals!

Anyway so this year's Diwali is going to be crappy and the fact that despite all promises of not celebrating it without me, my brother is on the roof right now, bursting firecrackers doesn't help! :(

I simply love this festival like no other. The graceful diyas, the candles, tiny, twinkling, innocent, helpless looking dwarf lights, the rockets whistling away merrily to the top, only to burst majestically into brilliant showers (multi coloured if you are rich :P)!..The not to be outdone anars- even the ones that cough and splutter and eventually smoke out. The unpretentious phool-jharis, secure in their indispensability and then the innumerable variations of these including the indigenous innovations of some of my braver cousins :P! The sulphur and phosphorus di oxides riding the air. Tiny lights twinkling everywhere, specially the Made in China ones! And the whole place so easily transforming into stretches and stretches of Fairyland!
(This is turning into a one page essay on Diwali I used to write in fourth grade :D !)

It's just so beautiful. A sight not to be missed, to be seen atleast once in life! A site to be remembered and longed for ! :) :)

And I shall not even begin writing about being with family, cousins coming over and the delectable food mom makes :D

Have a brilliant and sparkling Diwali! :)

Fall

Sitting on this wooden bench, waiting for my shuttle back to Campus I am completely charmed by the weather!

The cold breeze, rustling through the falling leaves, blowing across your face, rushing through your hair! The cold, lightly pinching, the trees donning a yellow garb while some outdoing others in resplendent red. The 'mausam' is refreshing!

It reminds me of a lot, of Doon, of North India, of Switzerland, of Laussane. The scenery only needs a line of snow capped peaks to be picture perfect! It makes one smile :)..if I were a kid I would twirl around with wide spread arms...maybe I can still do that now given that no one knows me here :P

All one needs to fully appreciate this is some 'chai' and pakode :D

The Eternal Question- Of Life, Universe and Everything.

There's just too much of "What should I do with my life?" going on these days! I mean the damned question just infests the air you know, buzzing incessantly, all over the place!
Us, the ones already past this phase, are of course bothered by a pestering mutant, "What AM I doing with my life?", instead.

If you are amidst a clan of overtly intelligent people (and highly conscious of it btw :P), obsessed with work, career, success, money, like I am, you will know what I mean!
Everyone is so busy trying to figure out the answer to that riddle that they end up doing just that, spend the entire life wondering what to do with it!

This is a good time to introduce our protagonist, this bright, young, aspiring punter. In a fit of benevolence God bestowed on him, more brain than man generally requires to survive and now the poor fellow doesn't quite know what to do with it! If the burden of his grey cells (and i don't mean the sheer weight) wasn't difficult enough to carry around, he has to live up to it too!

This brilliant chap, like all of normal humanity wants only to have a good time, to enjoy life, to take it easy like every other classmate of his. Unfortunately, every second social gathering is full of indulging aunts and patronizing uncles hailing him as the next whiz-kid. The more titled he gets, the more difficult it is to break the news to those ministering angles, that he actually does not want to win the Nobel Prize or even a scholarship to study higher!

Despite all discouragement, he bravely dreams of belonging to the ultra cool group of guys in his class. Litle does our hero know that his brain is conspiring along with the rest of the universe to drive him into the Sacred Academic Halls of Fame And Super-fast Paper Publishing. His mind makes it a point of getting bored in the company of anyone who cannot calculate the 13th roots of an imaginary number right away. The only exceptions to this rule are ofcourse any interesting women he meets on the way!

It doesn't stop at people. His master-mind puts up an Academy Award worth performance of getting bored with any job that doesn't require proving obscure theorems or solving equations in atleast 5 dimensions. Only that is when our chap thinks he is content. But as any grad student will tell you, solving such equations requires an incredible amount of slogging, you can't even write those matrices on paper for God's sake!

So, he has to be admitted (quite willingly though) into Institutes of Incredible Tangentialness. These are artificially set up societies where all such extreme cases spend a good 4-5 years of their youth isolated from the rest of humanity, finally feeling normal! The hope beneath this form of treatment is that they will get so used to feeling normal that they will actually start behaving normally which is of course exactly opposite of, or perpendicular to, the tangential behaviour they display initially.

A few years there and the forgiving society prepares to give our Hero another chance. Expecting him to be mature enough now to realise the charms of social life, it serves to our Hero on a platter, all possible worldly comforts. The job world beckons and for a while our noble Hero forgets his true purpose in this Universe.

His mind rebells.
"Are you crazy? I am made for struggle and glory and solving 20th roots!", it screams.

Our Hero, like all Heroes, has a heart though! And it finally speaks up.
"But I don't want to slog that much! I want him to get enough sleep, that too at home, not on ragged grad lounge couches!"
"What if he wants an easy life, with a non-demanding job and the time to act stupid? Why can't you be happy with an average job like most of his school friends? Why does he have to live upto you at all?", the throbbing heart retorts.

Torn between the two, our Hero battles it out with the eternal question: "What should I do with my life?"

But these are simply phases of feeble rebellion. Eventually, to our relief, the Good wins over the Evil and the poorly paying, noble grad life over the handsomely devilish Job one. Our Brave Hero returns, resolute and determined, to his cubicle, to stare at his computer- and read PhD comics!

Afterall, tomorrow IS another day....

What is not meant to be, never is!

It does not matter how much you stick to it, drag it along or try to keep it alive. All the elixir of this world will not save it, and if you're 'smart', you'll realise a lost cause when it stares you in the face.

It does not do to be a martyr, not for yourself and not for the sake of anyone else. You'll end up defeated, feeling cheated, blaming it on all but yourself, forgetting that it was you, who so willingly chose to carry the cross, in the first place!

That reminds me distinctly of Rhett and Scarlett, and I suddenly realise why the world worships bravery. I have had little occasion to be impressed by courage, except now when I begin to appreciate the heroism of these characters.

It astounds me, their bravery bordering on foolishness, confidence amounting to insolence, such brilliant recklessness, the absolute surety of purpose, of goals, and the willingness to risk it all for the one thing they want. To possess and wield an iron will, a bull-doggish determination, a belief that all can be conquered and to stoutly refuse to accept obvious defeat, to give up everything and then finally lose it all. It takes a lot to be someone like that!

One can either sink with one's flag flying high, like Rhett does, or salvage their cargo and escape on a make-shift raft, much like Scarlett, or hitch a ride on the next passing by boat. Most people I meet would do this last and argue that it is, after all the most 'practical' thing to do!

This time around however, I shall not object, but simply join the crowd and smile at my heroes, the ones I know I will not to measure upto!
