Koi yeh kaise...

Spot the difference....

Was just flitting through facebook and people's al(l-)bums. Diwali's just gone, so a whole bunch of them have put up displays of what they were up to.
Even though I flip through photos of completely unrelated people, you really couldn't tell the difference. Just replace different heads on the same snaps and Voila! - You have a new album!
How predictable is everyone's life? And how similar?

One friend's apartment, became the common arena for a whole bunch of desis. It's the same apartment in all albums, characterised by a conspicuous absence of furniture substituted for, by people crammed in all nooks and corners.
Then there is the food. The take out from reasonably priced Indian Restaurants, drenched in oil and choked with spices. Or the infamous Pizza, from Pizza Hut - where else?
The ones who had enthu to make some sweets inevitably settled on gulab-jamuns. (I am seriously surprised at how many different bunches of people were struck by the exact same brainwave!)
Every group has an overflowing number of people from South India and not-really-an-assortment of traditional dresses all of which have deep creases from being kept in the suitcase for a year and a half!
A proud display of a preciously small number of diyas, that number being proportional to the number of PhD students in the group which in turn is proportional to the state of funded-ness.

Then of course the games. It strikes me how popular these group games have become! Back in Undegrad we never gathered a bunch of people to play mafia! We just sat pulled each other's legs, cribbed about courses, gossiped about objects of mutual hatred (which could be you if you were missing from that day's discussion! :P ) , had arguments, fights, make-ups & generall TP!
But now - no we don't discuss, we don't talk, instead all of us play board games, card games, guessing games, singing games... there's a whole range of these and still people end up playing the same stuff!

It's astonishing to realise how much I am not in control! How much I am not unique! How common place am I now!

एक ब्राहमण ने कहा है कि ये साल अच्छा है

हमको मालूम है जन्नत की हकीक़त लेकिन
दिल के खुश रखने को ग़ालिब ये ख़याल अच्छा है

You just get used to it.

Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!

Richard P. Feynman is my hero. There is nooooo field in Physics he has left untouched. I mean the guy is just about everywhere. All pervasive.
It all started with this crazy book my friend was reading, "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!" I think it is called . My friend got obsessed with the man, going on to collect CDs of his lectures and forcing them down my throat too! And all this was when we were in school.
His fascination infected me and I started reading up on the fell
ow.
Life got serious but Feynman didn't. His lectures on basic Physics covering just about every topic exploded in my world in the 1st year of Undergraduate Studies and I laboured through the 3 volumes during my Summer hols.
I now work in a field far from Feynman's area of work, or so I thought.
Today, I was happily reading along some basic atomistic simulation quantum mechanics, having just stumbled across his name in the morning in the context of his work on QED, when out pops his name again and this time it is Quantum Statistical Mechanics and Many Body Physics. The area of work I desperately want to understand!
I mean come on!
Give the others a break!

It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional
studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than
Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than
Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks
than Americans.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks
than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and
suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
> CONCLUSION
Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills
you.

LOTR!!

May it be an even star
Shines down upon you
May it be when darkness falls
Your heart will be true
You walk a lonely road
Oh! How far you are from home

Mornie utúlië (darkness has come)
Believe and you will find your way
Mornie alantië (darkness has fallen)
A promise lives within you now

May it be the shadows call
Will fly away
May it be you journey on
To light the day
When the night is overcome
You may rise to find the sun

Mornie utúlië (darkness has come)
Believe and you will find your way
Mornie alantië (darkness has fallen)
A promise lives within you now

A promise lives within you now
